Sprawl is changing the face of Maine before our eyes—relentlessly transforming the state from a place of small towns, walkable neighborhoods and a slower-paced rural life to something increasingly like our crowded neighbors to the south.
GrowSmart Maine is a new statewide non-profit organization that is determined to change that, by organizing and coordinating the tremendous talent and energy of Maine people and promoting the idea that our best hope of success comes from working together. If we’re going to stop sprawl and maintain our unique and special qualities, the time to act is now.
This first Smart Growth Summit is the product of people from around the state representing natural resource protection, farming, forestry, land preservation, environmental protection, downtown revitalization, transportation, health, real estate development, planning, business, affordable housing and policy.
Morning workshops are designed to give an overview of a broad subject area, followed by afternoon sessions focusing on practical models, experiences good and bad, and useful tools. We encourage you to participate in workshops not only in your field of interest but also to reach into new areas as well, as part of our goal of connecting the many parts into a larger whole.
